In the Schapelle Corby case, the court ordered the evidence be destroyed, knowing that if the marijuana had been grown anywhere but Australia, the young lady would have been released immediately. The plastic bag containing the plant material was contaminated by police and customs officials preventing fingerprinting that possibly showed none of her fingerprints on the bag. They refused to weigh her luggage knowing that a discrepancy in the departure weight to the arrival weight would have cleared her. Australia stood by waiting for the trial to play out, refusing to interfere with USA's foreign policy of supporting dictatorships of potentially anti-American populations. Inaction by the previous Australian government has allowed this young lady to be imprisoned for 20 years, knowing that she may not last the distance. This story has been suppressed but sooner or later the sheer scandal of it will make this a huge story of international consequence. Hi, I am writing you today as a friend, to ask you to help Australians get the message to their PM Kevin Rudd that Australians want to see Schapelle Corby brought home a free woman. Who is Schapelle Corby? She is a 30 year old Australian girl who was apprehended at Bali airport 3 years ago with 4.2kg of marijuana in her surf board bag. She insists that it was not hers and was planted by baggage handlers. The Airport police would not weigh her bags despite her request to do so. A simple request that could have shown immediately the difference in weight on check in at Brisbane and arrival at Denpasar. They laughed when she insisted the bag be checked for fingerprints. The Indonesian court would not accede to her written request to have the drugs DNA tested for origin. Subsequently, they sentenced her to 20 years imprisonment. Justice for Corby has been severely compromised through inaction by the Australian Government in failing to insist to the Indonesians that they accede to Corby's written request. The evidence has now been destroyed and along with it the future life of a young Australian woman. The Australian Government refused to help with her requests. The Australian Prime Minister John Howard said 'We have done all we can for Corby. We cannot interfere in the courts of other sovereign nations.' However, if it had been grown in Bali or any other country but Australia, then she would have been automatically released. Is this the way the government, court and police of democratic nations should work? Would you feel protected by your country under similar circumstances?
